Secret Witness has become aware of the rampant increase of motor vehicle catalytic converter thefts and sales of stolen catalytic converters. The thieves use a variety of methods to remove the stolen catalytic converters to include the use of battery operated Sawzall type saws in which it takes less than 2 minutes to remove and steal one. Thieves can then sell each of the stolen catalytic converters for up to $500.00. Once catalytic converter is stolen from the victim’s vehicle the replacement and repair cost can approximate $1,500.00. Law Enforcement has indicated that several hundred catalytic converters have been stolen thus far this year. The actual number may be significantly more than that due to the fact that many victims don’t bother to file a police report on the theft. Thefts have occurred in residential neighborhoods, casino parking lots, hospitals, apartment complexes and office buildings. The thefts are on the rise and every vehicle owner can be a potential victim.
Secret Witness is offering a $750.00 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of any suspect who is involved in theft of motor vehicle catalytic converters or knowingly purchases or receives stolen catalytic converters.
